After-holiday wrap-up - 06 January 2004 . 23:38

So much has transpired since my last entry that I scarcely know where to begin!

The holidays passed nearly without event, which is a good thing. {My family has an almost insatiable penchant for turmoil, meaning a pleasant holiday season ‘round here is quite the blessing.} I must say it was good to see most of my relatives. It was especially wonderful to spend time with my mom and my sister as a family again. Even though it was just for the day, I greatly enjoyed the three of us being together for such quality time.

Life around the house has been quite the home improvement saga lately. My youngest sister, Selena, moved in last week. She had been staying with our grandparents but things didn’t work out between them. Too many generational differences you could say. Every day was a battle of wills between two stubborn women, one 65 and one 19.

If you think about it, that scenario could make for a semi-interesting reality show. Survivor: Old vs. Young.

On second thought, don’t think about it.

Regardless of the circumstances under which she arrived, she is now abiding with me. Our house is now at full capacity with the three of us, two cats and the occasional wayward field mouse. I wasn’t sure how the settling in period was going to go but things have been remarkably smooth. Almost too smooth. Selena and Liz have been getting along fabulously and the cats have welcomed Selena with open paws as it were. All in all a harmonious living arrangement.

Back to the home improvement I mentioned earlier. The house has three bedrooms. The master bedroom (aka: my room) was freshly painted and had new carpet when I first moved in. The other two bedrooms were in a state of neglect, both needing paint and other small repairs. This past summer Liz and I completed work on the smallest of the bedrooms and transformed it into a guestroom. Liz then took the guestroom as her own once the “Houseguest from Hell” departed. The third bedroom continued to go unused except as a dumping ground for everything I needed to store. The room sat awaiting me to make good on my promise of eventual fixing-up. Now that the room has a tenant I was forced to get to work.

I decided to paint the room a pale blue. The first shade I chose was too pale. In fact, once it dried, it looked almost white. Not wanting to believe I had made a mistake in the selection process I added a second coat. This did no good so I made a trip to Lowe’s this morning and chose a slightly darker shade and painted the entire afternoon. Long story short, the new shade is gorgeous and Selena’s very happy with the result. All that’s left is repainting the baseboard molding and other trim (in a contrasting bright white) and putting the furniture back in the room. My goal was to have the room finished by this evening but since I had to repaint I’ve had to modify the deadline to tomorrow evening. Mission status: nearly complete.

Not much transpiring in the ol’ social life. Wild Man and I seem to be at a stand still but it’s not all bad. He’s going through the finalization of his divorce, which is difficult for him, and I’m trying to be supportive. I’ve never been through a divorce so I can only imagine the magnitude of its emotional toll. I just hope this won’t be an all consuming nightmarish event for him. He seems to be doing well now but he mentioned that negotiations are getting very tense. Hopefully it won’t last long and he’ll be able to put this behind him. As for me, I’m not sure how best to support him. I hate seeing someone I care about in a predicament with which I can’t be of help. This is one of those times that all my good thoughts, sympathy and listening are all I can offer and, even though I’m aware of that, I feel awful. It’s like watching someone that needs a hand and having yours tied. I guess all I can do is continue to listen and make our time together enjoyable for both of us.

Selena just came home from a date and is eager to chat so I’m off! Ya’ll have a good one.
