Nerd - 16 January 2003 . 02:44 I think I'm morphing into a new subspecies......homo nerdius... I read mainly non-fiction...American history, history of American politics, etc. Fiction is too predictable for me and I'd rather invest my time in a book that will expand my understanding and knowledge of the origins of the American spirit than read some 400 pages of completely predictable, almost mind-numbing fiction. To me, it's like watching "Seinfeld" when I could be wathing the History Channel/Discovery Channel/the Learning Channel, etc. So one of the chicas I work with, Michelle, saw me reading a book during a slow night a couple of weeks ago and said, "What are you reading?" I showed her the cover (it was my John Adams book, the one I got for Christmas) and she said, "Oh, you're a NERD!" Now she was just kidding (okay, she meant it) and I thought I blew off the comment but apparently it stuck with me somewhere in the depths of my subconscience. Ever since I was "outed" from my nerd closet, I've begun acting like a nerd... 1. Openly admitting that, yes, I find Justin Timberlake's song "Like I Love You" to be a good jam... 2. Taking delight in meeting another history buff in a bookstore I went to last week....it was like a nerd reunion.... 3. Complaining to a worker at said bookstore because they had a non-fiction book shelved with fiction books.... 4. Contemplating buying myself a pocket-protector.. Okay, number four is a lie but the other three are worthy of the label "nerd" as well. Wasn't it bad enough being completely clueless when it comes to modern "culture?" Apparently not because I went for the gusto and got myself "outed." haha. I feel like one of the innocent residents of Salem during the Witch Trials...I've been branded.. It's all good though. I mean, nerds are ruling the planet now. The nerds I went to high school with (I was a mere nerd-in-training at that time) are either internet success stories, multiple-degree holders, mad money-makers, or VPs and CEOs in the world of finance and big business. So where's the love for THIS nerd?
