I feel much better now!
One of the (many) diary rings I joined is a book/readers themed ring in which one of the qualifications is that, on occasion, members share their opinion on a book they’ve read. Having not discussed a book yet, I figured it’s high time I live up to my end of the bargain.
One of the many Christmas gifts I received from my sister Liz was a copy of “Profiles In Courage” by John F. Kennedy. Having wanted this book for quite some time I was thrilled when she gave it to me and subsequently delved right into the text.
The book weaves the tales of eight courageous US Senators throughout America’s history over 230 pages. Those highlighted include John Quincy Adams, Daniel Webster, Sam Houston, Edmund Ross, Lucius Lamar and others. The stories of these men were of great interest to me and the way they were recounted made them captivating.
Aside from telling the stories of these eight Senators, Kennedy also devotes a chapter to his own ideas on courage in politics and his thoughts on the duties of elected representatives in our government.
Overall the book is well-written, well-researched and well-presented. I would be hard pressed to recommend a better book on political integrity in our nation’s history. Despite your feelings on Kennedy and your own political ideologies, I believe this book is a must read for every American.
