...like I've been tied, to the scratching post... - 02 February 2003 . 10:06

I don't know if ya'll read my other entry (from yesterday)....but you can read it here.

I left work this morning and went directly to Wal-Mart. (I have not officially begun my Wal-Mart boycott since Mom is still employed there. Once she leaves though, my spendin' money leaves with her...) Anyhow, I purchased some much needed items for myself AND Kitty. One of the items I purchased was a scratching post with a little fuzzy ball on top...this ball is bright green and spring loaded so that when Kitty paws it, it bounces around. This is supposed to provide "endless hours of entertainment" for cats and "an alternative to scratching furniture" or picking the carpet while sharpening their claws...

Yeah.

Kitty was, at most, curious when I brought home the scratching post. Once I selected a spot and set it up, she walked over to it, sniffed it a few times, walked around it twice, then sat there and stared at it. Then she carefully reached up, batted the fuzzy green ball and watched it bounce around. She looked at me, looked at the scratching post, yawned and walked away.

So much for "endless hours of entertainment." She then resumed her incessant scratching of my futon.

Amazing. It took her about 20 seconds to prove the scratching post manufacturers wrong.

I also picked up a spray bottle so I could enforce the "no Kitty, bad Kitty, get down Kitty" statements that come everytime she launches herself onto a forbidden surface (ie: my CD rack-where she likes to walk across and flip the CDs onto the floor-the coffee table-where she likes to claw the candle centerpiece, leaving curls of wax all around-the bookcase-where she likes to give flight to assorted knick-knacks...you get the idea). The water bottle, which cost all of 98 cents, is proving to be a wonderful investment....

I'm watching HGTV...some dudes are building an inground pool....boring...now I'm watching CMT...Cleetus Judd is hosting "Most Wanted Live"...this guys is hilarious. He's the 'Weird Al' of country music...his parodies crack me up.

While I was cleaning my kitchen this morning I opened the cabinet under the sink (my first mistake) and, without looking (my second mistake), I blindly reached down to grab the Ajax to scrub the sink. I felt something like a twitching nose and whiskers touching my arm. I thought, "No....it couldn't be...," then slowly I lowered my eyes...

It was a mouse. A very bold, very disgusting mouse sniffing my arm. I screamed and ran away. My cat, upon hearing the scream, ran into the kitchen and looked at me...I shooed her in the direction of the cabinet and she was quickly in pursuit. The mouse got away though and after Kitty climbed out of the cabinet I happened to notice that there were a few pieces of cat food lying in the cabinet. I picked up the bag and finally figured out what was attracting the mice to the cabinet....

One of the rodents gnawed a rather large hole in the side of the cat food bag, leaving a big pile of cat food spilled in a rather neat looking mound. So I spent about 20 minutes cleaning cat food out of the cabinet. I ended up throwing the bag away and distributing the new bag of cat food into two large heavy-duty plastic containers....if they gnaw through THAT plastic, they can have the food. I'll even set out a little dish...

So anyone with rodent-ridding advice, please feel free to share. Remember that Kitty has to be considered...I don't use poison because I fear the tricky little things will eat the poison and then, being sick, crawl out in the open and be eaten by Kitty...this would NOT be a good thing...
