Grasshoppers & Ants - 13 January 2003 . 01:08

Sitting here resting my bones, and this lonliness won't leave me alone, 2 thousand miles I roamed just to make this dock my home....

Okay, so I only roamed 1100 miles to make this my home but it's all the same.

I had a strange dream this evening. I wasn't even tired. I was up, alert and awake, engrossed in a History Channel special and ~WHAM~ I was hit by a "nap attack." (You say narcolepsy, I say nap attack.) So I'm sleeping and I dream about someone. They said "hello" and before I could say something that wasn't completely lame...

....AND THE DAMNED PHONE RANG!....

I tried to go back to sleep, recapture this dream, see what happens...

Alas, I could not.

AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!

Another reason I think the Amish got one up on us...no phones to interrupt them. They just got homing pigeons and stuff....if they're busy and a pigeon flies up, it can wait on the window sill until they're ready for the message.

Don't EVEN get me started on call waiting!

I took a trip down memory lane today with VH1's all day tribute to the 80's. Called, appropriately enough, "I Love the 80's". Man, I wanted to find my Members Only jacket, push up the sleeves, play some Atari (Pitfall and Frogger RULED) and play with a Rubix Cube....

Ah, the decade of plenty. I remember (I was only a yung'un then) us having money and being able to do things, go places, etc. Then, though my understanding of governmental finance, inflation and the economy in general at age 10 was limited, I could tell that 1990 and the following years were like the famine after the feast. Too bad Americans were too much like the grasshopper and not enough like the ants back then...

Meanwhile, I should be folding the 4 loads of clothes I washed today but instead I'm watching "Science of the Sexes" on Discovery Channel. They said a study has shown women are attracted to men whose immune systems give off the same smell as their fathers'. Scientists say that women are drawn to the familiar smell. So this kinda supports Oedipus & Freud..except the basis could be completely physiological instead of psychological. Interesting. So, what if the father is not around? Do the women become attracted to men with immune system scents like their mothers? Uncles? Step-parent? If it's based on familiarity, and there's no father for the mind to refer to, who does the psyche substitute? What if the child is raised by parents in a same-sex marriage? Would that give them a better chance of being attracted to the same sex? I'm not being smart or offensive here, I'm genuinely intrigued.

On another note, if we are attracted to other people by scent does that mean we're just a step up from dogs & cats? They pick mates based on scent, too. We just don't go around sniffin' butts before we get our freak on. Well, most of us anyhow....
