North Carolina History - 10 March 2003 . 19:41 On this day in North Carolina: 1948: Zelda Fitzgerald is one of nine women killed in an early-morning fire at Highland Hospital in Asheville, where she was being treated for schizophrenia. Locked doors and barred windows stymie rescuers. Dental records will identify the 47-year-old Fitzgerald, who with her late husband, novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald, had come to symbolize the excesses of the Jazz Age. 1991: After being whipped 96-74 by the University of North Carolina in the final of the ACC Tournament, Duke players angrily trudge onto the team bus. Coach Mike Krzyzewski bounds aboard and announces, "We're going to win the national championship!" Three weeks later, after defeating Nevada-Las Vegas for the NCAA title, the players cite Krzyzewski's comment as the origin of their dramatic reversal. In eight previous trips to the Final Four, dating back to 1963, Duke had come up empty. * * * * * * * * * * The above was taken from this AWESOME new book I got today entitled "On This Day in North Carolina." It gives history facts about NC for each day of the year. And yes, my loyal audience, I will now share these with you on a daily basis via Diaryland. A book I bought on my venture to....THE CITY!!!! Yes, the city I normally avoid like the plague due to its poor layout, its heavy traffic and its roads that change names at will. But today I got a 20% off coupon in the mail from this bookstore and hightailed it out the driveway!! Amazingly, I didn't suffer the usual getting lost and frustration. I really don't have anything to update ya'll on. I'm going to see my Mom & sister tomorrow. Thursday is Mom's birthday and since we all have to work, we're gonna celebrate a bit early. I can't wait until she sees the gift I got her...which I shall not reveal here at this time because if she checks the page then my surprise is ruined...I think she's going to LOVE it though. (IhopeIhopeIhope!!) Caffeine free Diet Mt. Dew is nowhere near as good as caffeine laden regular Mt. Dew. A few days ago someone from work was on the phone and he started cracking up, laughing hysterically for no apparent reason. I turned to see what was so funny and he, trying to regain his composure, said he was on the phone with his brother-in-law. Apparently his bro-in-law said, "Want to go with me tomorrow?" and David said, "Yeah, where?" and the guy said, "Up a pig's ass to get a bucket of lard!" Sick humor....
