13 hours and a soapbox - 09 January 2003 . 07:30

I am a lover of impressionist art. It is my weakness, the soft-spot of my straight-laced persona. When I cast my eyes on a Monet or a Degas I am overcome with a warm, peaceful feeling. A feeling so beautiful that it causes my ordinarily "high alert" guard to fall unnoticed.

Today at noon I was watching a special on impressionist artist called "The Impressionists," when the phone rang. It was my almost-boss, Stephen. Blah blah someone called in sick blah blah I'm here by myself blah blah reallyneedyatocomeinat5insteadof8today. (i typed the last part like that because he said it really fast and i wanted to give you the full effect) I had just seen a beautiful ballerina portrait by Degas and was feelin' all warm & fuzzy so, of course, I agreed.

It was like my mind had taken a little vacation...I didn't realize what I had agreed to until about half an hour later when the program was over and I zapped back to reality.

So, I went in at 5 last night and worked until my normal 6 am. Yep, a 13 hour shift at the hog plant. That's one heckuva long shift, I'm here to tell ya. But Uncle Sam is glad I worked it since he'll get to basically keep my overtime pay. To make matters worse, I have to return to the office at 9 this morning to fill out more red tape paperwork so I can get my benefits (insurance, etc.) without having to wait until May for open enrollment. Bureaucracies SUCK!

Mom & sis aren't able to make it this weekend...the former having a change in the work schedule and the latter deeply involved in a work search. I found this out and was bummed out until Dad called and invited me to go to an antique barn with him on Saturday. I hope he's planning on this being one of those "father & daughter" things, not one of those "father, daughter and father's girlfriend" things. Just in case, I'm making a back-up plan...Hey, gotta be prepared.

I'd like to take a moment to get up on the ol' soapbox and talk about driving etiquette. ~Ahem.~ When on a two lane road using your high beams, be considerate of oncoming drivers. Don't assume that you are exempt from the unwritten rule of REVERTING TO THE NORMAL, LOW BEAM SETTING when another driver approaches you. I am driving home and when a car approaches, always using their high beams, I put my headlights back on low beams. The bastards will, 9 times out of 10, blatantly ignore their obligation to refrain from trying to burn my retinas and blast by me with their obnoxious high beams still on. Ever persistent, they will keep their high beams on even if I blink my lights at them...the universal signal for them to lower their lights. Some smart asses will even blink their lights back at you if you have the nerve to attempt to get them to lower their lights. So for about 5 seconds each time one of these idiots pass me, I am temporarily blinded. And most of these jerks even have those blue 7 billion times brighter than anyone needs lights...ya know, the ones that fry your eyes?!?! Ils me faisent chier! (oooOOOOooo!! showin' off my foreign language knowledge...hehe)

~steps down of soapbox~ Alrighty, I've said my piece.
